THE STORY THAT INSPIRED THE MEME
Circle, chapter
by chapter.
From the first Bitcoin product to Circle Pay, USDC, a public listing, and Arc. A fan-made walk through the milestones, pivots, and people behind the name.
012013—2016
A company.
Then a send button.
The original chapter: two founders, Bitcoin, and a very human idea for using the internet.
2013
THE BEGINNING
Hello, Circle.
Jeremy Allaire and Sean Neville founded Circle in 2013. Their starting point was Bitcoin and a belief that digital money should be easier for ordinary people to use. The company began with a consumer experience, years before USDC or Arc existed.
2014
MAY 16 → SEPTEMBER 29
The first product meets the world.
Circle demonstrated its first commercial consumer product at Bitcoin 2014 in Amsterdam on May 16. On September 29, the service opened to a global audience. It let people deposit, store, send, and withdraw digital money. This was the beginning of the consumer-product journey that became Circle Pay.
2015
THE APP GROWS UP
Dollars join the conversation.
Circle introduced US-dollar account features, bringing familiar currency into the app alongside Bitcoin. Its September release expanded dollar payments and app features. Circle also became the first company to receive New York’s BitLicense that year.
2016
THE CIRCLE PAY YEARS
Payments with a personality.
The app expanded in the UK and Europe, adding pounds and euros to its story. December brought full messaging features: payments could sit beside photos, notes, and the everyday context of friendship. Circle introduced CENTRE and stopped offering direct Bitcoin buying and selling in its app. Social payments became the focus.
022017—2019
The story gets
a few new tabs.
Circle Pay was one part of a company trying several different ways to bring crypto into everyday life.
2017
BEYOND A SINGLE APP
An idea becomes a shared standard.
The work behind CENTRE moved toward token-based money and interoperability. Circle’s later account of this period describes a shift from building only its own consumer app toward infrastructure that other companies could use.
2018
FEBRUARY → THE REST OF THE YEAR
Pay, Trade, Invest—and Poloniex.
Circle acquired Poloniex in February. Its broader product family included the consumer Circle Pay app, institutional Circle Trade, and Circle Invest. It was a period of expansion across payments, trading, and digital assets.
2018
SEPTEMBER 26
USDC enters the story.
Circle and CENTRE introduced USD Coin, or USDC, on September 26. Coinbase announced support in October and joined Circle in the CENTRE effort. USDC would become central to Circle’s next chapter. It is a separate Circle product; CRCLPAY has no connection to it.
2019
JUNE → SEPTEMBER
Circle Pay says goodbye.
On June 13, Circle announced it would retire Circle Pay. The wind-down ended support on September 30. Circle described the app’s five-year social-payment journey as part of the path toward stablecoins and open financial infrastructure. This is the chapter CRCLPAY remembers most fondly.
2019
A CHANGE OF FOCUS
A smaller product family.
Poloniex’s spin-out was announced in October. By December, Circle was setting out a more concentrated stablecoin-platform direction for 2020. Sean Neville stepped away from his co-CEO role while remaining involved as a board director.
032020—2023
The app era ends.
The infrastructure grows.
A refocus, a public-listing detour, and the systems behind Circle’s expanding stablecoin business.
2020
THE PLATFORM CHAPTER
From consumer apps to building blocks.
Circle’s focus moved toward USDC and services for businesses and developers. Voyager announced its acquisition of the Circle Invest retail business in February. The consumer-app portfolio that defined the earlier years was giving way to a different company.
2021—22
A DETOUR, NOT THE IPO
A public-listing plan that didn’t happen.
Circle announced a proposed combination with Concord Acquisition Corp. in July 2021. The agreement was revised in 2022, then mutually terminated that December. Circle’s eventual stock-market debut would come later, through a different route.
2022
JUNE
A euro chapter.
Circle introduced Euro Coin, originally called EUROC and later known as EURC. Its product family now included a euro-denominated stablecoin alongside USDC.
2023
MARCH
A difficult weekend is part of the history, too.
Silicon Valley Bank’s failure exposed part of the USDC reserve and USDC temporarily lost its dollar peg. Circle reported that its deposits would be accessible following the authorities’ intervention. Remembering a company’s history includes its difficult moments.
2023
APRIL → AUGUST
New connections. A new structure.
Circle launched Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol in April, initially connecting Ethereum and Avalanche. In August, Circle and Coinbase announced the end of the separate CENTRE governance body; Circle took on full USDC governance responsibilities, and Coinbase took an equity stake in Circle.
042024—2026
From Circle Pay
to CRCL. And Arc.
The latest chapters in the real company’s story—and the two references that gave our meme its name.
2024
JULY 1
A European milestone.
Circle announced its French electronic-money institution authorization and MiCA-compliant issuance of USDC and EURC in the European Union. Its international stablecoin business had become a very different undertaking from the original social app.
2025
JANUARY → APRIL
The product family expands again.
Circle acquired Hashnote, the issuer of USYC, in January. In April, it announced Circle Payments Network to connect financial institutions using stablecoins. The payment theme continued at an institutional scale.
2025
JUNE
Four letters: CRCL.
Circle’s public-market chapter arrived in June, with its NYSE listing under CRCL. Those four letters are the first half of our name. They are a historical reference here: the CRCLPAY meme token is not Circle stock and provides no ownership in Circle.
2025
AUGUST 12 → OCTOBER 28
Meet Arc.
Circle introduced Arc in August as a Layer 1 blockchain designed for stablecoin finance. Its public testnet followed on October 28. Arc added a blockchain network to the company’s story.
2026
SEPTEMBER 16
A new chain. An old memory.
Circle announced Arc’s public mainnet launch on September 16. CRCLPAY is our unofficial meme homage planned for that network: a little internet souvenir for the people who remember where Circle began.
○That’s Circle’s history.
Our part is simply the meme.
